East Suffolk Museums & Heritage Visitor Experience Project

East Suffolk Heritage & Museums
Visitor Experience Project

East Suffolk Council has launched a new project to support and promote the heritage and museums sector, with a view to driving footfall and elevating the visitor experience to places of interest in our district.

Our Vision is to celebrate creativity and heritage in East Suffolk’s distinctive and diverse places in terms of collections, its buildings, stories and culture.

To achieve this, we will engage with representatives from across this complex and varied sector to understand what support is required and to ensure three important outcomes:

  • Collections and heritage assets are cared for and protected.
  • Visitors to our district know where to find places of interest and they enjoy an outstanding experience when they visit, so they will come again and tell others.
  • We grow visitor numbers and recognise the important contribution this sector makes to the local economy, particularly in our towns and rural areas.

The Visitor Economy is a key part of a thriving, sustainable economy and we are working to align our rich heritage with local skills, business growth and pace-making priorities.

Data shows that 2.61 million visits to East Suffolk are attributable to culture, representing a solid 26% of tourism in the district. Furthermore, cultural tourists have a higher average spend. We would like to grow that number.

In addition, 31% of residents visit a museum or heritage site a year. We want to grow that number too.

How can we support the sector?

Elevating the experience

We will share experience and best practice to ensure a thriving heritage & museum sector.

The project was launched at an event at the Red House in Aldeburgh when representatives gathered to engage and offer their insights and suggestions. This will continue through onward collaboration, partner updates and growing the network.

Free membership for accredited Museums throughout East Suffolk. This will help visitors find out about you and ensure you are included in social media posts, blogs and specialised itineraries. We also have a bank of professional photography, including many heritage sites, for you to use in your marketing campaigns.

East Suffolk Council is proud to support Heritage Open Days (HOD) across the district, helping local organisations and communities showcase and celebrate East Suffolk’s rich heritage.

Although the Heritage Open Days Small Grant Scheme has now closed, the funding provided by ESC has helped event organisers prepare a wide range of activities, exhibitions and experiences that will take place during Heritage Open Days in September.

Through grants of up to £750, ESC supported organisations in delivering inclusive and engaging events, enabling more residents and visitors to discover local heritage, explore historic places, and connect with the stories that make East Suffolk unique.

As part of its ongoing commitment to culture and heritage, ESC continues to champion Heritage Open Days and the volunteers, venues and organisations that make the festival possible.
