Felixstowe is East Suffolk’s second largest town and home to the UK’s busiest container port. Supporting the Port of Felixstowe is the associated logistics sector which includes shipping lines, freight forwarders, hauliers, warehousing, and port related services.
Felixstowe has long been a traditional seaside resort fashionable in the Edwardian and Victorian era. Its greatest attraction is its five mile coastline with long beaches, wide sea views and an extensive promenade. The town is enjoying a resurgence of interest with record visitor numbers and improved seafront attractions.
Despite its Peninsula location Felixstowe is 15 miles from the county town of Ipswich and 100 miles from London. The A14 provides the main road route to local centres of population and the Felixstowe Branch Line is a part of the Greater Anglia rail network.
Felixstowe is seeing an upturn. It is a town that is enjoying significant growth following public and private investment in a number of projects in recent years. Businesses are looking again at Felixstowe with confidence to invest in a town that is a uniquely attractive place to live and work.
Recent developments include the restoration of the Felixstowe Seafront Gardens, the new Pier, and Martello Park.
East Suffolk Council in partnership with Felixstowe Town Council and Suffolk County Council supports the local Coastal Community Team, Felixstowe Forward, as a leading place based initiative to continue to stimulate growth, attract new businesses to the town and enhance both visitor and community infrastructure.
East Suffolk Council has the following plans to continue to stimulate growth in Felixstowe:
Creating the North Felixstowe Garden Village, a residential development which will include a new Leisure Centre
- Identifying development opportunities along the south seafront in order to enhance the quality and range of the visitor offer.
Encouraging a stronger link between the Port of Felixstowe and the growth of local micro and small businesses (e.g. in transport, logistics, etc.).
- Working with businesses to bring in a Business Improvement District to stimulate the Town Centre
